Timothy L. Moore (Urban Thoughts) is a spoken word artist based out of MEMPHIS, TN. Timothy Moore graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts as an English Major with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Memphis. After graduation, he joined a trio of poets which successfully launched a series of powerful spoken word events that grew to become known as Uncensored Live! Feeling the need to educate his community about the importance of English and language, he returned to the University of Memphis to graduate from the School of Education with the Arts in Teaching Master’s degree with a specific concentration in Instruction and Curriculum. Timothy Moore taught effectively for four years in the Memphis City School system before deciding to return to the stage full-time to address problems that he witnessed in his community.
Timothy Moore turned the corner from a guy with a pen to Urban Thoughts, under the direction of well-known poet and author Mr. Gordon O’ Sing and Mrs. Sarah McCullum who helped develop his voice through writing workshops at the University of Memphis. O’Sing challenged Timothy, “…to write beyond what you feel like you should write; instead, write the hard and never fearful truth.” Having cut his teeth on the local Memphis Slam and poetry scene, Timothy ventured out nationally. He has performed in over 20 states including Nevada, Alabama, Tennessee, Illinois, Arizona, California, Georgia, both Carolinas, Kentucky, and numerous cities. He has been featured on television, radio, internet, and print. Whether performing in large stages in front of hundreds or intimate wedding settings of just a handful, Urban brings the same dedication to a memorable performance.
To continue to raise awareness for social issues through his poetry and writing, Urban Thoughts authored the Urban Thoughts Poetry blog to provide a forum for current issues. Urban's blog has captured an active audience that follows and engages conversation on a wide array of topics from entertainment and dating to politically conscious material or personal reflections on current social issues.
As an artist, Urban is capable of writing on any subject or performing in any venue. His humble demeanor and conscious effort to leave the audience with thoughtful reflection and enthusiastic entertainment provide for a unique poetic experience. Some of his literary influences are: Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, Beau Sia, G. Yamazawa, Saul Williams, Reggie Gibson, Nikki Giovanni, and Yusef Komunyakaa.
As a small business enthusiast, Urban Thoughts founded Speak LIFE Society which creates high quality spoken word events, business documents, and educates youth on the power of a pen. Speak LIFE Society is a community partner of the MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES through the TEAM UP Project which creates literacy based community service projects for the youth of Memphis, TN.
As a community advocate for the youth, Urban Thoughts founded the P.E.O.P.L.E which is the Memphis spoken word slam team. To create a network where poetry is influential in the growth of the community has always been a dream to Urban and THE P.E.O.P.L.E are the link towards bridging the old guard and the new warriors of poets that exist on the poetry scene now. Urban is continually looking to improve the network of the youth poets into the market. He serves as a mentor through the TEAM UP project and has personally mentored over 20 young men and 25 young ladies to college. He has taught over 3,000 students through the school system and workshops. Truly embracing the role as a mentor, Urban finds joy in the smile of a new writer and hopes to witness the birth of many more to come.
