Nelson Mandela
once wrote, "Money won't create success, the freedom to make it will." Often our dreams conflict with our need to survive. For me poetry is my survival, each bar I spit, entertainment show I invest in, hours spent preparing, minutes spent worrying, and each time I write is a moment to define my freedom. Recently, I found myself in a new place: Iron Mouth Battle League. This league has given me true friends, a few associates, a few haters,  a few turned family, a few that can't stand me as a writer, some that love me as a writer, but most of all positivity and  SUPPORT! They support my writing and allow me exclusive access to write and meet battlers. They purchase material, books, magazines, articles, have came to my shows, provided talent, and never asked for a dime in return only respect. These are real people with real dreams.

This life is tough. In business, there are no friendships. I write and call battles as I see them. I have been argued, shouted down, respected and disrespected. I am a man first, journalist second, and poet third. Lines of distance are clearly drawn. They have a business, I respect and in our dealings I have found a new grit to my writing that has helped me land major deals. During this time, I remembered the small town of Tuskegee, Alabama that I came from. The poverty, the struggle, the stench of hardships and the true obsession that I had with obtaining something better. I did a lot when I grew up. I made mistakes some very bad and some that turned out good. In the effort, truth was found. Money can't make you happy but it can make things better.  Somewhere in obtaining these things, I forgot the beauty of truly wanting an opportunity.

During my visits, different magazines have asked me to right about the underground culture of battle rap. As it continues to break mainstream, the fight to find the new "superstar" battler is brewing. For me, I have a few favorites around the nation but four of MEMPHIS own is at the top of my short list: MAC DARO and YOUNG HERB are two.  The other two. Well you will have to wait for that (rubs hands).

I believe that money make fights so I am sponsoring a rap battle on MAY 30, 2015 @ The New Ciroc Lounge in Memphis, TN.  A little chicken, bread, or guap add fuel to gasoline. AC Dutch and K-Wine were creative and gracious enough to allow me the opportunity to give back to a culture that has given me new depths in my spoken word as I go into battle at SOUTHERN FRIED Regionals in June. We defy the ideals that African-American Memphis men do not have talent, business sense, or can't work as a unit. In this article alone, you have five mentioned by name that are at the top of their respective games.

WHY MAC DARO VS. YOUNG HERB?

EASY.

MAC DARO is a calculated, aggressive, high energy wordsmith killer who preys on missed opportunities or weakness in his foes. His style is relentless. He bars attack after attack with little bluffs or fluff. He has a massive support system that follows him which creates a home field advantage wherever he goes. HIs MONEY TEAM is a powerful unit of battle rappers that are all proficient at destroying others. A well respected crew, following, skill, and a hunger that is unmatched in a business mind is dangerous.

YOUNG HERB is a dangerous, aggressive, counter puncher with a ferocity that few ever master in the ring. His style is constant motion and performance. He schemes with the best and punches with devastating multis. His bars have a natural blend of complexity and simplicity so that average ear catches but battle rappers have to ponder simultaneously. His ZUCRU is one of the strongest crews in this region. Many of them have traveled well across state lines to battle and win in hostile territory. Young Herb may be arguably the most branded of any IRON MOUTH BATTLE RAPPER due to his constant promotion and reach across multiple battle rap leagues and platforms.

They say style makes fights. This fight is monster of a fight. Put two seasoned, angry pit bulls in a ring with one small steak and see which one comes out. If you put Mike Tyson in front of Mike Tyson who gets knocked out? Neither will back down and neither will run and hide. For me this makes incredible opportunities and an article potential that allows me to see which one can truly rock a crowd. And last: BECAUSE I CAN. GOD has blessed me & keeps me so if I can help my artistic community.  I know. Many of you are like ain't no GOD in all that rapping or what not. GOD is in everything. SO I will. If not me then who? Someone has to see that helping others fight for a dream in essence gives you the chance to fight for yours. I'm fighting for mine. Come see me rock a tee and some jeans. I will be fresh to death (shout out to WHAT-IT-IS: dope tees) on the stage holding cash. See you there.  -URBAN THOUGHTS  #urbanthoughtspoetry #poetry #battle www.UrbanThoughtsPoetry.com

Win or lose that's why you will always be a winner Herb, you get it. Not even a full year later (since we met) and you have already made some serious moves. Believing in yourself means everything and you know that. You are so motivated and driven and that's what sets you apart from the rest. From the first time I ran across you, I knew you were something special. When I had the pleasure of having you on the show I knew why. Keep living and fighting for your dream lil homie. You know you always got the big deal support. Its an honor to watch you on ya road to greatness! Im proud of you. Keep cookin! #salute
